Braun and Singerman each have a long history in bodybuilding. Singerman, from New Orleans, started hitting the gym when he was 13 and kept working out, even through a cocaine and heroin habit he picked up after dropping out of high school. At 27 he witnessed a friend overdose and die, so he got clean and doubled down at the gym. In 2005, he got a job as a personal trainer and started writing thousands of posts on bodybuilding message boards and eventually became marketing director for Ironmag Labs, a supplements company owned by businessman Robert Dimaggio, who had become notorious for selling sketchy supplements. Singerman convinced Dimaggio to bring on Braun, whom he'd met at a bodybuilding competition, as the company's top sponsored athlete.

Technically speaking, BALCO is extinct, but Victor Conte is a free man and still running a business called "Scientific Nutrition for Advanced Conditioning" or "SNAC." After serving a four-month prison sentence prior to pleading guilty in 2005, he now sells various supplements and vitamins. Patrick Arnold and Greg Anderson each served a three-month jail sentence after pleading guilty with Anderson serving an additional three-month house arrest sentence. Recently Anderson was incarcerated again after being found in contempt of court for refusing to testify about Barry Bonds and Gary Sheffield’s use of banned steroids. [14] BALCO is not completely dead however; on the SNAC website, Conte has BALCO apparel for sale. [15]

My point is, we can’t have a situation where one athlete is “wonderwoman” or “super man” and the other other is a doper based purely on performance.  Given that the best predictor of the response and suspicion is a line of latitude and longitude, I think we need to be a little more nuanced in the discussion.  And yes, the context matters – it’s a Chinese world record, so dodgy, and Ayana trains in a place not known for stringency in anti-doping.  Those factors make me equally suspicious. When Lord Coe told us all that he hoped we could believe what we saw in Rio, I don’t think he could see that coming from the first track final of the week’s athletics!
