Amphetamine is a potent central nervous system (CNS) stimulant of the phenethylamine class that is approved for the treatment of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and narcolepsy . Amphetamine was discovered in 1887 and exists as two enantiomers : levoamphetamine and dextroamphetamine . [note 1] Amphetamine refers to equal parts of the enantiomers, ., 50% levoamphetamine and 50% dextroamphetamine. Amphetamine is also used as a performance and cognitive enhancer , and recreationally as an aphrodisiac and euphoriant . Although it is a prescription medication in many countries, unauthorized possession and distribution of amphetamine is often tightly controlled due to the significant health risks associated with uncontrolled or heavy use. As a consequence, amphetamine is illegally synthesized by clandestine chemists , trafficked, and sold. Based upon drug and drug precursor seizures worldwide, illicit amphetamine production and trafficking is much less prevalent than that of methamphetamine .
Like drinking and driving, it's illegal to drive if your driving has been impaired by taking drugs. With some drugs, you can even remain unfit to drive the next day. As well as this drug-impaired-driving offence, it’s now illegal in England and Wales to drive over set levels for any of 17 named drugs (legal and illegal) in your body, whether or not you are impaired. Very low limits have been set for some common illegal drugs such as cannabis, cocaine and MDMA. You can get a heavy fine, be disqualified from driving or even go to prison. The 2005 Survey showed that an estimated million Americans 12 years of age or older were current users of illicit drugs, which means they used these drugs within the month prior to being interviewed for the survey. That number represented % of the population of that age. But million people, or % of the population 12 years of age and older, reported driving under the influence of illicit drugs during the year preceding the survey. Compare that to driving under the influence of alcohol: million people, or about % of people 12 or older, did so at least once during the same year. 198
